.                           He says that Crockett Duncan, b Aug 1857, was the s/o George R. Duncan and Nancy Duncan, but "not sure".
.                     2. "
The Water-Powered Mills of Floyd County, Virginia", Franklin F. Webb, p 205:  This gives different versions of Crockett's
.                           parentage.  One is that his "parents, whose surname may have been Nester, were drowned while crossing Little River as
.                           part of a wagon train headed west.  The infant Crockett, too small for an older brother to care for, was left to be raised by a
.                           John Duncan family, whose last name he took as is own".  Or he "was born between 1854 and 1860 (as calculated from
.                           various census entries) to David William Duncan and Sarah Nester Duncan, who died of a fever in 1861.  David Duncan
.                           remarried in 1863 but at some point Crockett was taken in by the Benjamin Duncan family and was listed as a member of
.                           that household in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.  When his father, step-mother, and siblings left for Indiana about 1875,
.                           Crockett, who was by then at least 15 years old, stayed behind."
