. Thomas W. Robinson, 1807 - 1901 . of Hampden Co, Mass, Bolton, Tolland Co, Conn, . and Manchester, Hartford Co, Conn . . author: Michael D. Nestor, email: mdn3557@yahoo.com . Thomas W. Robinson,1 ? (James Ewell) . . He was born 7 Apr 1816, and his name was originally William Thomas Ewell, son of James Ewell Jr and Elizabeth Williamson, . according to "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", Vol 81, p 310, 'Timothy Williamson and his Descendants', Jul . 1927. Prior to his marriage in 1836 he took the alias Thomas Robinson. There is a birth date discrepancy, compared to the records . for Thomas W. Robinson, see below, but if this Thomas was actually born ca 1807, then that would contradict the above source's . claim that he was the same person as William Thomas Ewell, since William's parents were born in 1792 and 1793. He seems to be . the same person as Thomas W. Robinson of Hampden Co, Mass and Tolland and Hartford Co's, Conn, who added about 10 years . to his age in all the records. DNA evidence per Nancy Salvi below confirm a relationship between the Robinsons and Ewell descen- . dants. . The pages from the above source are copied onto the next page. . b Apr 1807 Mass; d 4 Oct 1901, bur East Cem, Manchester, Hartford Co, Conn. His tombstone gives his name as Thomas "S." Rob- . inson, b "1805", d 1901, but he was born Apr 1807 acc to the 1900 census, which is consistent with the other census records, which . estimate his birth as 1807-09, and his 1892 Declaration below, gives his age as 85, or born ca 1807. The middle intial of "W." was . given in his sons John's and Charles' birth records and the 1892 declaration below. . See note and images below for the LDS death records of Thomas and Polly. . See picture below of tombstone of Thomas S. Robinson, Mary A. his wife, and Annie C. Burd. They may not be actually buried . there, but just their names added to the stone. A note on The Town of Manchester Plot Card, Lot No 55, Div 2, Section W, East . Cem: "Thomas S or W Robinson = ? Thomas Robinson - 1901 removed from East Cemetery to an unknown location." . He was of New Haven acc to the marr record. . m 14 Dec 1836 Derby, New Haven Co, Conn to Mary Ann Chapman (Polly), b 10 Mar 1813 Oxford, New Haven Co, Conn, d 24 . Aug 1883 Bolton, Ct, d/o Reuben Chapman (#1) and Mary ____. The census records give her estimated birth year as ca 1809- . 14. Marriage date from "Connecticut Town Marriage Records, pre 1870 (Barbour Collection)", but the Derby town records don't . have this marriage listed. Thomas' 1892 declaration below, gives a marriage date of 12 Dec 1836 Murpheysville, Ct, and her death . date. Polly was listed as "of Oxford". However this marriage date was confirmed in Polly's and Thomas' 1862 divorce decree - see . image below. The death record below gives her death date as 24 Aug 1883, age 74. Polly and Thomas divorced 2 Apr 1862 acc to . Polly's 15 Oct 1866 Claim for Mother's Pension for her son Charles' Civil War service, at which time she gave her age as 58, and . a document in that file certifies the marriage date of 14 Dec 1836, at which time she was of Oxford. . Acc to the www.findagrave.com entry by KAM, which has the picture of the tombstone for Thomas and Mary Robinson and Annie . C. Burd, Mary Was Mary A. Burd Robinson, but this is apparently a presumption that the Mary J. Burd, mother-in-law of Wil- . liam Henry Robinson married Thomas. However Mary was born ca 1818, 10 years younger than Mary Ann Chapman Robinson, . and Thomas would have had to marry her after he was listed as wid/div in the 1880 census and her death date of 1883. This error . prob came from the fact that Mary Burd's dau Annie Burd's name was also on the tombstone with Thomas and Mary Robinson. . From the photos of the tombstones for Thomas and Mary, and his son William and his wives, they all appear to be the same stone, . but one on the front and one on the side of the stone, so Annie's name being on the same side as Thomas and Mary is not signi- . ficant. Additionally, the other two faces of this same tombstone have the names of William's children by his two wives. . 1836 Thomas Robinson was of New Haven, Conn at the time of his marriage acc to the 1866 document referenced below. . 1840 Hampden Co, Mass census, Springfield, p 49, Thomas Robinson, 00001-10001. . 1850 census, family not located. . 1856, Sep 30: Tolland Co, Conn: Warranty Deed, Vol 13, p 122: Charles Sumner sold 1 acre of land with a house and barn on Nor- . wich Road (now Bolton Center Road) to Thomas Robinson for $200. Note: this writ was signed one day after the date that Thomas . deserted his wife Polly - see divorce petition below. . 1862, 26 Mar: Tolland Co: Polly Ann Robinson, of Bolton, filed a petition for a bill of divorce from Thomas Robinson, of Tolland. . She states that they were married on 14 Dec 1836 and that on 24 Jan 1861 Thomas deserted her. She claimed he had been . "continually guilty of intolerable cruelty" and "has been guilty of such misconduct as permantly destroys the happiness of . the petitioner". By order of Court, Polly was "hereby declared to be sole single + unmarried."
